The Goat Hill Breeding Program Too many purebred
livestock breeders are working to produce more animals, without defining a
program addressing how they will produce better animals. We feel that a well
defined program is vital, as is a strict culling program that "promotes the best
and neuters the rest". In order to produce outstanding individuals, a
breeder needs to take advantage of hybrid vigor (heterosis) by crossing
different families or lines. However, before you do, you must concentrate
the genetics of the families you intend to cross, or you loose all
predictability. Crossing two unrelated individuals of known genetics is
"hybridization", but crossing two animals of unknown genetics or from wide
genetic variation is "bastardization". Our program involves concentrating
the family genetics of the Moneymaker line, (mostly through Sunboy Stanton 149
Nick or Sunboy 117 Loverboy)to be crossed with the concentrated
lines of Generator (through Sunboy Waco 139 Lightenin) and Tasman
Zorro (through Onyx) families. To this end we have invested considerable
funds and traveled many miles to obtain individual animals that fit into our
program. At the same time we have declined to add many quality individuals
that were priced right, simply because they did not fit for us. |
